So, the weekend didn't go completely as planned.... The weather flipped on us (as far as forecast) so we did the joint hike on Saturday. We got to the trailhead just as it got filled up. The hike in to the col between Blackhead and Black Dome was a rather nice hike. We stopped on the way up at the spring to make sure our bladders were full as we weren't expecting water until on the way down. We then made it up to the col, turned right, and headed up Black Dome and Thomas Cole. Overall, not a bad climb.... there were a couple steep spots on the way up Black Dome, but nothing horrible. The rocks in the area being sedimentary, they break off and give you rather good foot holds.
The hike back to the col was just as easy, and the views from the 2 different overlooks on Black Dome gave great views of the north and south. Next up was Blackhead. This was a little wetter, but not horrid to get up. Sadly the view from the overlook just past the peak was very hazy. We were warned a few times that the escarpment trail down Blackhead was a steep trail, and that made us consider going back the way we came up, but in the end we did go down the trail. One minor slip/fall on the way down and we finally got to the trail junction and the better trail. In the end we did just under 8 miles round trip, peaked 3 35ers (26 to go for me) and had a perfect day for hiking.
The downside of it all was that there seems to have been a pebble stuck in my boot between the lining and the leather. That resulted in something sitting on top of a toenail and causing me to think I was going to be bruised and lose the nail. That didn't happen, but between that and needing a day off, we ended up staying home on Sunday, so my plans for 6 peaks didn't happen.... there's plenty of more days ahead for that.
