Wanting to get more winter practice in, I added on my snowshoes and ice axe since there was measurable snow fall just beore I went hiking. All the hikes were short, but added up to nearly 10 miles in the end.
First up was Mt. Arab Fire Tower. The drive in was fun in that it was snowing and some of the roads were a little slick, but it wasn't that bad a drive in. I got to the lot and asked myself if I should really go hiking as I wasn't really feeling it. Well, I went anyways and felt better by the time I got to the top. The trail was reasonable, nothing bad. I did see some coyote tracks on the way up, but didn't see any of the animals. When I got to the top, the tower was frozen. One of the windows was open and I was able to see out of it... the others though were frosted over and frozen shut.... thankfully views from just below the cab were beautiful. I took an alternative trail around the top and found a beautiful bench looking over the valley... in the middle of the summer, this would be absolutely lovely.
Next was Goodman Mt. Little did I know that it was named after one of the men who were killed in Philadelphia MS in 1964. The hike up was the longest of the day, but it was soooo easy. First half was an old road, the second half was a nice easy trail. The last bit was a slab and the partially bald peak was gorgeous.
The third peak of the day was Coney. This was just a mile down the road, and again, the trail was quite easy. A nice, gentle mile hike up to a bit of slabs and a bald top. Nothing difficult on the hike, especially since it was a newer trail. The views were also damn good. With that, the Tupper Triad was done.
A final hike was the Buck Mountain Fire Tower. This is not to be confused with Buck Mountain on Lake George (too many mountains with duplicate names in the park, much less state). This trail was wet. Then it climbed. At the end was a bunch of wooden steps. That was iffy in the snowy conditions I was hiking in. I got up it just fine though, and found what felt like a brand new tower. The views were once again beautiful. Trying to come down the stairs was fun though... slow and steady and I made it though.
