Having a nice day ahead of me, I decided to do Gore. I went up from an unusual trailhead, the Raymond Brook Trail instead of the Schaefer trail out of the resort. This route is a ski trail until it hits the Schaefer trail, and it was beautiful and obviously not well used as I didn't see a single person on it. What I did see though was a startled black furry butt running away not far from the start. My first thought was it was a bear cub, but it was way too small to be that. Instead, I think it may have been a fischer I spooked.
When it came time to cross over via the Rabbit Pond trail though, I couldn't find the trail, and ended up bushwacking about 1/4-1/2 a mile as I was only feet away from the proper trail. On the way back though, I did find the markers and saw that about 20 feet from where I started, I went left where the trail went right. Oops! But that's ADK trail markers for you.
After a bit on the Schaefer trail, we go to the point where you cross the Ski trails, and eventually end up on the ski trails until you hit the top. Those things are steep and rocky roads that were not fun to hike up at all. The summit itself is also treed in and the tower is all radio equipment, so you can't go up it. Thankfully, the top of the ski lift gave decent views. Overall a fun day, and it almost makes me want to pick up skiiing again.
