At this moment, I have 19 high peaks left to complete my winter round of 46. I went out on the first day of winter and got Colden, and found that winter hiking is what I remember, and did better than I expected on the hike. That is good because I have a bunch of long hikes ahead of me. At the moment, this is what I have left, and my concerns on each of the hikes.
Cliff and Redfield (Dec 27): These 2 are some of the more remote peaks in the park. Getting both of them is around an 18 mile day from either of the closest trailheads. I'm choosing the slightly shorter route from ADK Loj but that adds a few hundred feet of elevation as you have to go over Lake Arnold. As of a week before this hike, the trails are known to have been broken and at least to the Uphill Lean-to area well traveled.... the herd path up Cliff isn't broken out though. So, I only expect this to be a long day, with no really difficult things, and I am hoping the cliffs of Cliff are mostly snowed in and easy to get up.
MacIntyre Range Iroquois, Algonquin, and Wright (Dec 30): Algonquin and Wright are heavily traveled year round, so I have no concerns over them. The herd path to Iroquois is my concern as that is known to be a stretch of spruce traps. While it's a relatively short hike being under 10 miles, it could take a bit to go from Algonquin to Iroquois and back.
Seward Range Seymour, Seward, Donaldson, and Emmons (Jan 2): I go into this hike expecting to do it as 2 hikes, but hoping to do it as one. The concern is can we get to the summer lot. If not, it adds 6 miles of road walk to a long hike. If I can't get all 4 in one hike, I will go in the following weekend to get the other 3. Seymour is the goal for the hike on the 2nd. It'll be gravy if we can add the other 3 that adds 6 miles and 3300 feet of elevation. We will see how we feel and how the herd paths are.
Marcy, Skylight, and Grey: No date set for this yet, depends on the Seward range, could be Jan 10th, could be Jan 31st, or some other date. Like Cliff and Redfield, these are some of the more remote peaks in the park. Marcy is no concern, that's going to be a highway to get there. The concern is the south side of Marcy. How bad will it be getting to Skylight, Grey, and then getting back to Loj. I plan to do it as a loop via Lake Arnold, but it may be an out and back over Marcy depending on how things are broken out. It's going to be a long day.
Street and Nye (Jan 17): This will be an ADK hike and my only real concern with this is the stream crossing. The hike itself is relatively short and not that difficult overall.
Allen (Jan 24): Another ADK hike for me. This is the longest hike for a single peak, and is where the lone hiker died last year. It's a long day, but the hike is relatively easy with the exception of the slide for the last mile. My only real concern with this is the water crossing at 4 miles in. Hopefully it'll be frozen over.
Marshall (Feb 7): Also an ADK hike for me. This is a relatively straight forward mountain, not horribly far in, but the herd path can be difficult in the winter if nobody has been up it recently.
Saddleback (Feb 14): My last planned ADK hike. This is a long day, but nothing too horrible as part of it. This will be an in and out, so we avoid the cliffs, and makes it a safer ascent/descent than doing a loop.
Basin and Haystack: These will be my final peaks. I hope I can get them both on one trip, and it will be a long day. My concern with this is Shoreys Shortcut. I know it's not a true shortcut as it adds in a fair amount of elevation while it does cut off some mileage. It may or may not be broken out. Doing it with Basin first, the question is how things are going to be getting to Haystack and back to the Phelps trail. Again, some of the most remote peaks in the park. I hope I can get both in 1 trip, and I may stay at Johns Brook Lodge to cut off 7 miles (if I stay 2 nights).
So, the current planning has me doing the following mileage/elevation wise:
Cliff/Redfield: 18 mi, 4800 ft
Iroqouis/Algonquin/Wright: 9.5 mi, 4300 ft
Seymour: 13.7/19.7 mi, 3250 ft
Seward/Donaldson/Emmons: 15.6/21.6 mi, 4450 ft
Marcy/Skylight/Grey: 17.2 mi, 5000 ft
Street/Nye: 8.3 mi, 2700 ft
Allen: 18 mi, 3600 ft
Marshall: 13.9 mi, 2900 ft
Saddleback: 12.5 mi, 3250 ft
Basin/Haystack: 17.8 mi, 5290 ft
Total: 144.5/156.5 miles and 39,540 feet (7.5 miles) of elevation.
