Today I lead a hike for ADK up Street and Nye. These 2 are relatively smaller peaks, Nye being the second shortest of the 46. That doesn't mean they are easy. We hit the trail around 630, and the initial trail out to Indian Brook is relatively flat and was very thin snow wise. The big fear of the brook not being frozen was unfounded. The water crossing was very solid and we crossed it with no issues. The second water crossing that I didn't remember was a little more sketchy, but it was frozen enough that we didn't need to go across the tree.
From there, we start to climb. The trail was getting deeper, but we didn't have more than a couple inches of fresh stuff to break. After a slow ascent up the transition from valley to shoulder, the steepest section of trail, we were shortly at the split in the trail. We chose to do Nye first, and in a few minutes we were at the viewpoint, with the top of the MacIntyres cut off by the clouds. A quick jaunt over to the sign, and then back down to the col, and up Street.
I forgot how steep the climb up Street is, but it's really not that bad, especially since 2 groups went up before us, so there was absolutely no need to break any trail. We met one group on their way down and the other at the top. As a side note, 2 of the group were wearing the snowshoes that look like they're made of styrofoam, or as they described them, what snowshoes would look like if they were made by Crocs. They do not recommend them for the high peaks. Live and learn I guess.
We then passed many many groups of people on the way out. Most were wearing snowshoes, 2 were just in spikes, but the trail at this point is firmly packed down, so they weren't doing any damage unless they stepped off the side of the trench.... but legally, when you start the climbing, we're well over 8 inches so snowshoes are required.
In the end, a great day in the woods. GPS tracked it as 8.72 miles and nearly 2900 feet of elevation over 6 and a half hours. That makes 39.9 miles and 1.94 miles of elevation over 29 hours for the year. It also marks peaks 32 and 33 for my winter round, 13 to go.
