Yesterday, I went up Seymour. This is one of the more remote mountains to hike up here, being just over 14 miles for a single peak. That said, it's not a horrible hike until the climb. Thankfully, the road in was open all the way to the summer lot, and the lot was able to be parked in. I did put chains on my car at the winter lot as I was having a bit of trouble, but the chains worked well and I got in and out of there with no issues.
Started off with a brisk 5.5 mile hike in to the Ward Brook lean-to This is a relatively flat hike in, a slow constant 5 to 10% slope with a couple of downs that you come to hate on the way out. We were the second on the trail, and we followed his tracks all the way to the herd path. The climb up the herd path is hard. It's 1.4 miles and nearly 2000 feet of elevation. This is one of the steeper trails in the park. As we got the the really steep sections going over 50% slope. Snowshoes helped a lot on these and we were able to just walk right up them. The heel lifts were very useful here. It took us a bit, but we ultimately reached the top with no big issues.
The hike out was a mix of cautious steps down, long glissands, and butt slides. Going down those super steep spots had some really good slides down. Then, it was the long slog back out to the car. I decided to pass on getting the rest of the range, and I saw reports after that the guy we were following who was going to do the whole range got tired out on the way up Seward, so he turned around. Hopefully next weekend I can get the other 3 peaks.
Year to date: 14.24 miles over 8.75 hours and 2700 feet of elevation.
