After a full day of training, I headed up to do Hurricane from the north side. The road to Crow Clearing was in pretty good condition, a couple small divots/washouts that were not hard to get over even in my tiny car. The first mile in on the gulf brook trail was in great condition. Only one blow down that people were going around, but was easy enough to get over.
Crossing the brook at the start of the North Hurricane trail was interesting. The brook was running high and a couple of the rocks I had to use were an inch or so below water. It was not bad though. The first half of that trail was in decent shape, a couple spots of mud, but nothing horrible. The climb up though, that was wet and muddy most of the way up to the junction with the Hurricane Mt. trail. The last bit of trail in the woods was wet and a bit of mud, but at that point, expected. When I got on top about 530, the wind was blowing hard enough, I opted to not go up the tower. still, beautiful day out in the woods.
This was the first time I've come in from the north, and I love the trail, just maybe next time I'll wait until we've had a few days of dry weather. I know that won't get rid of all the mud and water, but it would make it a little better. Plenty of mossy rocks and trail the higher up I got. Now, I need to do the even lesser used trail in from the east.
In the end, the gps recorded 5.48 miles over just a hair under 3 hours. Year to date, I'm at 148 miles and 116 hours of hiking.
